Total Solar Eclipse

April 8th, 2024

There’s “Nothing to See Here” in Newport, Arkansas for the 2024 Great North American Eclipse! On Monday, April 8, 2024, Arkansas will experience a once-in-a-lifetime event during a total solar eclipse. Newport and Jackson County are among the Arkansas communities that will be in the path of totality. The partial eclipse in Newport will begin at 12:36 p.m. The total eclipse is expected at 1:54 p.m. with over three minutes of total darkness. There have only been two total solar eclipses over Arkansas in the state’s history, which

occurred back in 1834 and 1937. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event that is expected to attract an influx of visitors to the state to witness this historic event.

Nothing to See Here!

Setting itself apart from other areas in the path of totality, Newport offers “Nothing to See Here,” making it a perfect place to visit during the eclipse. No trees or hills obstructing the sky, no tall buildings blocking your view, no big-city lights interfering with darkness. There’s nothing

to see here unless you love wide open spaces, some local flavor, easy access, and fun stuff to do in the dark.

Spot a Local Legend

You may also spot a legend during the 2024 eclipse! White River Monsters have been observed near Newport since Native Americans lived along the river. It appears that early monster sightings also coincided with the only two total solar eclipses in Arkansas history – in 1834 and 1918.  Could it be that the 2024 eclipse brings the White River Monster out of hiding and back to its original habitat in the White River Monster Refuge?

What is a Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. People viewing the eclipse from locations where the Moon’s shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the Sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun.
